The dative case after these prepositions

The dative forms are visible in common nouns:

  • помощь → благодаря помощи
  • поддержка → благодаря поддержке
  • ожидания → вопреки ожиданиям
  • прогноз → вопреки прогнозу
  • закон → согласно закону
  • данные → согласно данным
  • решение → согласно решению
  • инструкция → согласно инструкции

These forms are easy to misread because many dative forms overlap with prepositional or other cases. Поддержке could be dative or prepositional in isolation. The preposition decides the case. In благодаря поддержке, it is dative because благодаря requires it.

Благодаря: enabling cause, not just any cause

Благодаря is historically related to “giving thanks,” and that history still affects usage. In careful writing, благодаря is strongest when the cause is favorable, helpful, enabling, or at least presented as beneficial.

  • Благодаря врачу пациент быстро восстановился. — Thanks to the doctor, the patient recovered quickly.
  • Благодаря раннему предупреждению люди успели уйти. — Thanks to the early warning, people had time to leave.
  • Благодаря опыту команды проект удалось завершить. — Thanks to the team’s experience, the project was completed successfully.

Learners sometimes use благодаря for every “because of.” That can sound strange when the cause is negative:

  • Weak in careful neutral style: Благодаря ошибке система перестала работать. — “Thanks to an error, the system stopped working.”
  • More neutral: Из-за ошибки система перестала работать. — Because of an error, the system stopped working.
  • More formal: Вследствие ошибки система перестала работать. — As a result of an error, the system stopped working.

Russian speakers do sometimes use благодаря ironically or in contexts where the result is mixed. But learners should not begin there. Use благодаря when the cause is helpful or framed positively. Use из-за, вследствие, по причине, or a clause with потому что when the cause is negative or neutral.

Вопреки: contrary to expectation, pressure, or obstacle

Вопреки means that something happens despite or contrary to something else. It often connects an outcome to a resisted expectation, forecast, rule, order, prohibition, advice, or obstacle.

  • вопреки ожиданиям — contrary to expectations
  • вопреки прогнозу — contrary to the forecast
  • вопреки запрету — despite the prohibition
  • вопреки советам врачей — contrary to doctors’ advice
  • вопреки распространённому мнению — contrary to popular opinion
  • вопреки трудностям — despite difficulties

The key is opposition between expected direction and actual outcome:

  • Вопреки ожиданиям, переговоры продолжились. — Contrary to expectations, the talks continued.
  • Вопреки трудностям, команда завершила работу. — Despite difficulties, the team completed the work.

Do not reduce вопреки to a generic “although.” It usually points to a noun phrase that exerted pressure or created an expectation. If you need a clause, Russian often uses хотя or несмотря на то что:

  • Хотя было трудно, команда завершила работу. — Although it was difficult, the team completed the work.
  • Вопреки трудностям команда завершила работу. — Despite the difficulties, the team completed the work.

The second version is more compact and often more formal.

Согласно: source, rule, data, document, or standard

Согласно introduces the source or standard according to which a statement is made.

  • согласно закону — according to the law
  • согласно договору — according to the contract
  • согласно инструкции — according to the instructions
  • согласно данным опроса — according to survey data
  • согласно решению суда — according to the court’s decision
  • согласно плану — according to the plan
  • согласно расписанию — according to the schedule

This construction is very common in formal writing because it lets the writer attribute a claim to a document or source:

  • Согласно отчёту, расходы выросли на десять процентов. — According to the report, expenses increased by ten percent.
  • Согласно правилам, заявление подаётся в письменной форме. — According to the rules, the application is submitted in written form.

A major learner error is adding с by analogy with English “in accordance with” or with Russian adjectives like согласен с чем-то.

  • Correct prepositional construction: согласно договору — according to the contract.
  • Different adjective construction: Я согласен с договором is possible only in the sense “I agree with the contract,” and even that may not be the intended style.
  • Nonstandard for the target construction: согласно с договором.

For serious written Russian, teach согласно + dative as the default.

Punctuation and sentence position

These phrases often appear at the beginning of a sentence. When a phrase is long or frames the whole sentence, a comma is common after it:

  • Согласно результатам исследования, уровень доверия вырос.
  • Вопреки ожиданиям, проект не закрыли.
  • Благодаря поддержке коллег, работа продолжалась.

Shorter phrases may appear without strong punctuation depending on style and sentence flow:

  • Проект благодаря поддержке коллег продолжался.
  • Он вопреки запрету пришёл на встречу.

Learners should not treat comma placement as the main lesson here. The main lesson is that these phrases frame logic. Punctuation follows the writer’s need to separate that frame from the main clause.

Благодаря vs из-за

  • Благодаря дождю урожай спасли. — Thanks to the rain, the harvest was saved.
  • Из-за дождя матч отменили. — Because of the rain, the match was canceled.

Вопреки vs несмотря на

  • Вопреки прогнозам, экономика выросла. — Contrary to forecasts, the economy grew.
  • Несмотря на плохую погоду, мы пошли гулять. — Despite the bad weather, we went for a walk.

The meanings overlap, but вопреки more strongly suggests contradiction of an expectation or opposing force.

Согласно vs по словам

  • Согласно отчёту, расходы выросли. — According to the report, expenses increased.
  • По словам директора, расходы выросли. — According to the director / in the director’s words, expenses increased.

Согласно often points to a document, data, rule, or formal source. По словам points to a person’s statement.

Согласно + dative vs согласен с + instrumental

  • Согласно правилам, вход закрыт. — According to the rules, entry is closed.
  • Я согласен с правилами. — I agree with the rules.

The forms are not interchangeable.

Reading formal Russian with these prepositions

In public and institutional prose, these prepositions are signals of argument structure.

Благодаря tells the reader, “Here is the enabling cause.”

  • Благодаря внедрению новой системы сроки обработки заявок сократились.

Вопреки tells the reader, “The outcome contradicts what this noun phrase would lead you to expect.”

  • Вопреки опасениям экспертов, переход прошёл без серьёзных сбоев.

Согласно tells the reader, “The claim is being grounded in a source or standard.”

  • Согласно данным ведомства, число обращений снизилось.

Once learners can identify these discourse jobs, they stop treating formal Russian as a pile of long words. They begin to see logical scaffolding.

Common learner misreadings

The first error is using genitive instead of dative: согласно закона instead of согласно закону, вопреки прогнозов instead of вопреки прогнозам. This error is common because many other Russian prepositions take genitive. These three do not.

The second error is using благодаря for negative causes where из-за would be safer. Благодаря аварии поезд задержался sounds either ironic or clumsy. A learner should write Из-за аварии поезд задержался.

The third error is treating согласно as if it were always “I agree.” The word family overlaps with agreement, but the prepositional construction means “according to / in accordance with.”

The fourth error is missing the concessive force of вопреки. In вопреки ожиданиям, the writer is not just saying “after expectations” or “about expectations.” The writer is saying that reality went against them.

The fifth error is ignoring the source hierarchy after согласно. In согласно данным исследования университета, the source is not simply “data, research, university” as equal nouns. It is data of the university’s study.

Make three labeled cards:

  • благодаря + dative = helpful/enabling cause
  • вопреки + dative = against expectation/obstacle
  • согласно + dative = source/rule/standard

Then attach noun families to each:

  • благодаря поддержке, помощи, опыту, данным, реформе
  • вопреки ожиданиям, прогнозу, запрету, советам, трудностям
  • согласно закону, договору, инструкции, плану, данным, решению

The next step is sentence logic. For every phrase, write a main clause that matches the preposition’s meaning:

  • Благодаря помощи коллег проект завершили.
  • Вопреки прогнозу проект завершили раньше срока.
  • Согласно договору проект должны завершить к июню.

This prevents mechanical case drilling. The learner is forced to connect grammar with argument.
