First Conjugation Verbs: Patterns, Stress, and Practical Prediction

The first-conjugation ending pattern

The core endings are:

• я -у / -ю
• ты -ешь
• он/она/оно -ет
• мы -ем
• вы -ете
• они -ут / -ют

With читать:

• я читаю
• ты читаешь
• он читает
• мы читаем
• вы читаете
• они читают

With делать:

• я делаю
• ты делаешь
• она делает
• мы делаем
• вы делаете
• они делают

This pattern should become automatic, but automatic does not mean mindless. The stem may change.

Common regular first-conjugation verbs

Many high-frequency verbs are friendly enough:

• читать — read
• делать — do/make
• знать — know
• работать — work
• слушать — listen
• думать — think
• играть — play
• отдыхать — rest
• гулять — walk/stroll
• понимать — understand

Examples:

• Я читаю статью. — I am reading an article.
• Она работает дома. — She works at home.
• Мы знаем ответ. — We know the answer.
• Они слушают лекцию. — They are listening to a lecture.

These verbs are ideal for early fluency because the endings are visible and the stem is stable.

Stem alternations inside first conjugation

Some first-conjugation verbs change the stem in the present:

• писать → пишу, пишешь, пишут
• искать → ищу, ищешь, ищут
• резать → режу, режешь, режут
• плакать → плачу, плачешь, плачут
• сказать → скажу, скажешь, скажут

The endings are still first conjugation, but the stem is not the bare infinitive stem.

Compare:

• писал — past stem with с.
• пишу — present stem with ш.
• искал — past stem with ск.
• ищу — present stem with щ.

This is why learners should learn писать — пишу — пишешь, not just писать.

-Овать / -евать verbs

Verbs ending in -овать / -евать often have present forms in -ую / -юю and -уешь / -юешь:

• рисовать → рисую, рисуешь, рисуют
• танцевать → танцую, танцуешь, танцуют
• интересоваться → интересуюсь, интересуешься, интересуются
• путешествовать → путешествую, путешествуешь, путешествуют

Learners often create forms like рисоваю by extending the infinitive. That is wrong. The present stem is different.

Infinitive ending traps

Some -ить verbs do not follow the usual second-conjugation expectation:

• брить → брею, бреешь, бреют — to shave
• стелить → стелю, стелешь, стелют — to spread/lay
• жить → живу, живёшь, живут — to live

These are important because they prevent overconfidence. The infinitive ending is a clue, not a guarantee.

Stress in first conjugation

Many first-conjugation verbs have stable stress:

• чита́ть → чита́ю, чита́ешь
• рабо́тать → рабо́таю, рабо́таешь
• ду́мать → ду́маю, ду́маешь

But others need attention:

• писа́ть → пишу́, пи́шешь
• сказа́ть → скажу́, ска́жешь
• жить → живу́, живёшь

Stress should be written on learner cards. It affects pronunciation and listening recognition.

First conjugation and aspect

First-conjugation endings can appear on imperfective present forms and perfective simple future forms.

• Я читаю статью. — I am reading / I read. Imperfective present.
• Я прочитаю статью. — I will read the article through. Perfective future, but first-conjugation-like ending.
• Она пишет письмо. — She is writing a letter.
• Она напишет письмо. — She will write the letter.

Do not assume a present-looking ending always means present time. Aspect controls interpretation.

Contrast sets

Regular stable stem

• читать → читаю, читаешь, читают
• делать → делаю, делаешь, делают

First conjugation with alternation

• писать → пишу, пишешь, пишут
• искать → ищу, ищешь, ищут

-овать pattern

• рисовать → рисую, рисуешь
• танцевать → танцую, танцуешь

Infinitive trap

• говорить → говоришь — second conjugation.
• жить → живёшь — first-conjugation-style ending.

Common learner misreadings

The first error is forming present tense from the infinitive too directly: писаю for пишу in the meaning “I write” is a serious error; note that писать has another vulgar/childish homonym issue in some forms, so accuracy matters.

The second error is saying рисоваю instead of рисую.

The third error is treating all -ить verbs as second conjugation.

The fourth error is ignoring stress: пишу́ but пи́шешь.

The fifth error is forgetting aspect: напишу is future, not present.

For each first-conjugation verb, record three forms: infinitive, я, ты, они.

• читать — читаю — читаешь — читают
• писать — пишу — пишешь — пишут
• рисовать — рисую — рисуешь — рисуют

The ты form reveals the conjugation ending clearly; the я form often reveals stem alternation; the они form distinguishes -ут / -ют from second-conjugation -ат / -ят.

The first conjugation should be taught as an ending pattern plus a set of stem behaviors, not as “verbs that end in -ать.” Many -ать verbs are first conjugation, but the learner needs better diagnostics.

Core endings:

• я читаю
• ты читаешь
• он / она читает
• мы читаем
• вы читаете
• они читают

With consonant-final stems, the endings appear as:

• я живу
• ты живёшь
• он живёт
• мы живём
• вы живёте
• они живут

The endings -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут / -ют are the main visual signal. Learners should train the eye to see them in running text.

Now add stem behavior. Not all first-conjugation verbs are as transparent as читать:

• писать → пишу, пишешь, пишут
• искать → ищу, ищешь, ищут
• сказать → скажу, скажешь, скажут
• плакать → плачу, плачешь, плачут
• давать → даю, даёшь, дают

The endings are first conjugation, but the stem may change. A learner who knows only the infinitive can still be surprised.

Stress must be included. Compare:

• чи́тать → чита́ю, чита́ешь
• писа́ть → пишу́, пи́шешь
• жить → живу́, живёшь

Stress can move, and stress is part of the word. A first-conjugation lesson without stress is incomplete.

Also mention that some verbs ending in -ить are not second conjugation in practice:

• брить → брею, бреешь
• жить → живу, живёшь

Do not overload the learner with rare exceptions, but make the principle clear: the infinitive ending is evidence, not proof.

Build a first-conjugation recognition drill. Start with non-past forms and identify the pattern before naming the infinitive:

• пишешь → first conjugation ending -ешь, infinitive писать
• живут → first conjugation ending -ут, infinitive жить
• дают → first conjugation ending -ют, infinitive давать

This reverses the usual chart direction and prepares learners for reading.

For production, have them conjugate in sentence frames rather than columns:

• Я часто читаю новости.
• Ты пишешь медленно, но точно.
• Они живут недалеко от университета.
• Мы даём студентам примеры.

For practice, identify first-conjugation endings in ten real-looking sentences, then produce full forms for читать, писать, искать, жить, and давать with stress marked where possible.

Final rule

First conjugation gives you the endings -ешь, -ет, -ем, -ете, -ут/-ют, but the stem and stress still have to be learned from real forms.
