Explanation
The first field on a serious Russian card is pronunciation and stress. Russian stress is mobile, meaningful, and often invisible in normal writing. A card without stress trains false confidence. Write догово́р, звонИ́ть, катало́г, квартА́л if those items are part of your study set. Include one spoken phrase when possible, because stress in isolation does not always guarantee phrase rhythm.
The second field is part of speech and morphology. For nouns, record gender, plural if irregular or useful, genitive singular and genitive plural when relevant, and whether the noun declines. A card for меню should say neuter, indeclinable: новое меню, в меню, из меню. A card for дочь should include дочери, дочерью, plural дочери, genitive plural дочерей. For adjectives, include hard/soft pattern and a non-masculine form. For verbs, include aspect, conjugation pressure points, past forms if irregular, imperative if useful, and government.
The third field is collocation. Russian often chooses different verbs than English. You do not “make” a diagnosis in ordinary Russian; you поставить диагноз. You do not “take” a decision in English-style calque unless the Russian collocation is actually принять решение. You сдать экзамен, сдать анализ, заключить договор, подать заявление, оказать помощь, нести ответственность, уделять внимание. Collocations should be stored as complete phrases.
The fourth field is case government. Some words are not safe until their complements are known: бояться темноты, помогать брату, руководить отделом, гордиться сыном, похож на отца, богат ресурсами, согласно правилам. Case government is not a separate grammar topic that happens later. It is part of word identity.
The fifth field is register and domain. A word may be neutral, colloquial, formal, bureaucratic, literary, technical, legal, religious, Soviet, post-Soviet, internet-coded, or rude. Умереть, скончаться, погибнуть, сдохнуть, and уйти из жизни are not interchangeable. Начальник, руководитель, шеф, and босс differ in register and social flavor. Record this early, before bad production habits fossilize.
The sixth field is contrast. Each card should protect the word from its nearest rivals. Знать vs узнать; смотреть vs видеть; работа vs труд; право vs закон; лечение vs лекарство; врач vs доктор; должность vs обязанность. A contrast line prevents one English gloss from swallowing a whole Russian field.
A model card
Word: лечение Stress: лече́ние Part of speech: neuter noun; verbal noun from лечить Core meaning: treatment as process or course, not necessarily medication Collocations: назначить лечение, проходить лечение, курс лечения, эффективность лечения Grammar: лечение чего? can take genitive in formal phrases; often object of назначить, начать, продолжить, прекратить Contrast: лекарство = medicine/drug; терапия = therapy, often more technical; помощь = help/care/assistance Register/domain: medical, administrative, patient-facing Example: После обследования врач назначил лечение. Common error: translating treatment as a specific pill.
This is more work than a two-sided card. That is the point. Russian rewards fewer, better cards over thousands of orphaned glosses.
Contrast sets
1. Bad card vs good card
- Bad: иск = lawsuit
- Better: иск, masculine; legal domain; подать иск, рассмотреть иск, исковое заявление, иск к компании, отказ в иске
- Bad: счёт = account/bill
- Better: счёт, masculine; открыть счёт, оплатить счёт, номер счёта, на счёт / со счёта; distinguish banking account, invoice, score, and count
2. Recognition card vs production card
A recognition card helps you understand согласно договору. A production card makes you use dative after согласно without hesitation. For dangerous structures, design both.
3. Isolated word vs phrase unit
- диагноз → weak
- поставить предварительный диагноз → strong
- договор → weak
- заключить договор на оказание услуг → strong
- заявление → weak
- подать заявление через личный кабинет → strong
If your vocabulary deck is already large and weak, do not rewrite everything at once. Run a triage pass. Mark cards that cause repeated mistakes, high-frequency verbs, domain terms, false friends, and words needed for production. Upgrade those first.
Use a three-color status system. “Recognize only” means the word is useful for reading but not safe for active use. “Guided production” means you can use it inside memorized phrases. “Free production” means you can change case, tense, aspect, and register responsibly. Most new Russian vocabulary should not jump straight to free production.
Do not attach every possible fact. Attach the facts that prevent likely errors. A noun card needs gender and collocation. A verb card needs aspect and government. A particle card needs discourse function and example contexts. A domain term needs source and register caution.
Turn a gloss into a usable card
The real shift happens when a thin translation card becomes a sentence-ready card. Compare договор = contract with a fuller card: догово́р, masculine noun; заключить договор, условия договора, расторгнуть договор; legal or business register; contrast with соглашение. The point is not to collect trivia. The point is to record the details that prevent predictable errors.
The most important card fields are easy to name. First comes word identity: stress, part of speech, and whatever morphology is dangerous enough to matter. Then comes sentence behavior: case government, collocation, and aspect where relevant. Then comes usage boundary: register, domain, and contrast with nearby words. Once those are attached, the card starts behaving like part of a language instead of a label in a box.
What makes a card worth keeping
A strong card should usually answer three questions:
- What form am I really learning?
- How does it behave in a sentence?
- What nearby word is most likely to confuse me?
That is why лечение works better as a full card than as a gloss. It is a neuter noun derived from лечить. It naturally appears in назначить лечение, проходить лечение, курс лечения, эффективность лечения. It needs contrast with лекарство, терапия, помощь, and sometimes обследование. Without those attachments, a learner recognizes the word but still cannot use it safely.
A practical upgrade habit
If an existing deck is large and weak, the best move is not to rewrite everything at once. Upgrade the cards that keep causing errors, the high-frequency verbs and nouns, the false friends, and the domain words that you actually need in real reading. A good card for a legal or medical word may take longer to build, but it saves time later because it prevents the same bad guess from returning every week.
One simple test helps. Try to finish a sentence with the card. If the word is лечение, can you complete Врач ___ лечение после обследования with назначил or назначает naturally? If yes, the card is starting to work. If your first instinct is a vague verb such as сделал, the card is still too thin.
Final rule
A Russian vocabulary item is not learned until it carries enough grammar, collocation, register, and context to function in a sentence.
