STEM Russian is often easier than literature in one way and harder in another. It may be less ironic and more structured, but it is dense with terminology, nominalization, genitive chains, participles, passive constructions, units, and diagrams. The reader must become comfortable with compressed noun phrases.

Terminology should be learned by field and morphology. давление, напряжение, скорость, плотность, погрешность, измерение, вычисление, соотношение, and распределение are not just vocabulary. Their suffixes signal abstract quantity, process, or result. Many technical nouns in -ение come from verbs and preserve action logic.

Nominalization is central. Instead of “we measured temperature,” a Russian technical text may say измерение температуры проводилось. The agent disappears; the process becomes a noun; the method becomes a phrase. This style is not a mystery if the reader reconstructs the hidden action: someone measured temperature using a sensor.

Passive and impersonal structures are common because technical prose foregrounds procedure and result rather than person. Было установлено, получены данные, рассчитано значение, наблюдается увеличение, and показано на рисунке are high-frequency patterns.

Diagrams require visual grammar. Labels often omit verbs and articles. Зависимость скорости от времени means a relationship of speed to time, likely “speed as a function of time.” Схема установки may be a setup diagram. Направление движения is direction of movement. The reader should connect labels to arrows, axes, tables, and captions.

Numbers and units matter. Russian uses decimal commas in many contexts, abbreviations, case after numerals, and unit labels. 5 мм, 3,2 кг, при температуре 20 °C, в течение 10 минут all need exact reading.

Read technical nouns as hidden actions

STEM Russian becomes easier when technical nouns are unpacked back into the actions they compress. Many high-frequency abstract nouns in -ение preserve a verbal logic even when the sentence hides the actor.

These should be read not as static dictionary objects, but as traces of “someone measures,” “someone processes,” and “someone calculates.” That habit makes nominalized prose much less opaque.

How to survive genitive chains and figure language

Two structures create most of the reading pressure in technical Russian:

  • genitive chains
  • figure and diagram references

The right strategy is to start from the head noun and work outward. In измерение температуры поверхности образца, the head is измерение; everything else narrows what is being measured.

The same discipline applies to figure language. Phrases such as на рисунке показано, по оси X отложено, and как видно из таблицы are not decorative transitions. They are instructions for where the meaning has moved: into an image, axis, table, or caption.

What a STEM reading note should capture

A good STEM note should turn a technical sentence into a structured record with these slots:

  1. figure or text reference
  2. variable or quantity
  3. condition
  4. unit or numerical relation
  5. procedure or result
  6. uncertainty or field-specific term

That is why На рисунке 2 показана зависимость скорости реакции от температуры should end not with a loose translation, but with a note that identifies the relation, the variables, and the place where the evidence is being shown.

STEM Russian becomes readable when technical nouns are treated as compressed actions and diagrams are treated as part of the sentence rather than as decoration.
